Sorrels and docks (Rumex spp.)
Family: Polygonaceae
Flowering: Late April - August
Description:
Sorrel is an herbaceous plant whose size ranges from 30 cm to more than one meter high.. Among the many species of this plant genus, some are well known such as the curled dock (Rumex Crispus), the sheep’s sorrel (R. acetosella), the common sorrel (R. acetosa) and the broad-leaved dock (R. obtusifolius). The pollen is dispersed by the wind. This pollen may cause respiratory allergy in sensitized individuals. It is rather difficult to determine the role of sorrel pollen in allergy since the pollination period coincides with the one of grasses, also known as Poaceae.
