Plantain (Plantago spp.)

Family: Plantaginaceae

Flowering: Late April - September

Description:

Plantain is an herbaceous plant very commonly found in meadows, fields and roadsides. Its inflorescence is borne on stalks between 3 and 10 cm tall. Pollen dispersal of this plant is performed by the wind and insects. Plantain pollen is allergenic, however the amount of plantain pollen grains dispersed in the air is very limited. The three main species in Belgium are the ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata), the greater plantain (P. major) and the hoary plantain (P. media). Most individuals sensitized to plantain pollen are also allergic to grass pollen.
